Commercial Lighting Equipment Safety Information

One of the most common causes of commercial fires is electrical and lighting equipment, according to the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association.) This type of fire is not easily predicted, as the lighting equipment can look totally fine on the outside in your Golden Gate business.   • Building sprinklers should be examined and tested every 5 years
  • There should always be a fire extinguisher in reach inside of a commercial building and they must be checked annually to ensure they are in working order
  • If an office building is on fire, exit the building immediately and do not try to fight the fire yourself
  • If there is a lot of smoke inside the building, cover your mouth and nose and do your best to not inhale any of it
  • Wet pipe sprinklers installed in the ceilings of commercial buildings are very effective in helping to fight the fire(s)

When was the last time your building had a fire sprinkler inspection? Fire sprinklers are a critically important part of every fire protection system, but they need annual inspection in order to ensure that they will be able to keep you protected at all times. Most jurisdictions require that sprinkler systems receive regular inspections, performed to NFPA standards.

Annual Fire Sprinkler Inspections

The NFPA requires that you have annual fire sprinkler inspection in order to keep your building safe. In addition, you should have fire sprinkler inspection every time you:

  • Add a backflow preventer or water meter to your building’s plumbing system
  • Significantly change the occupancy, layout, or use of your building
  • Face changes in public water supply, such as a water shortage

Fire Sprinkler Inspection Process

During your fire sprinkler inspection, our trained professionals will:

  • Visually inspect for proper orientation, support, and clearance of all sprinkler heads and system piping that are readily viewable and accessible from the floor
  • Perform main drain tests and record results to verify proper water volume and pressure is available for the sprinkler system
  • Lubricate valves
  • Check alarm and supervisory devices to make sure proper annunciation and notification is indicated, if connected to the building alarm system
  • Test flow switches by flowing water from the inspector’s test connection
  • Test tamper switches by exercising the valve through the full range of motion and verifying that signals are received at the fire alarm control panel
  • Check fire department connections for proper caps and accessibility
  • Check system gauge calibration date and verify the water pressure is adequate
  • Check for proper signage on valves
  • Inspect spare head box for proper inventory of spare sprinkler heads and wrench
  • Verify that all valves are in the proper position and sealed or supervised
  • Verify signals are received at the central monitoring station, if the system is monitored

How to Keep Your Sprinkler Safe Between Inspections

Between fire sprinkler inspections, there are a number of things you can do on your own to keep your fire sprinkler safe:

  • Never paint your fire sprinkler heads
  • Never hang anything from your sprinkler heads
  • Never stack anything within 18 inches of your sprinkler heads
  • Always report damage to your fire sprinkler system to a certified fire protection company
  • Always make sure your control valves are in the open position

What are the Different Levels of a Commercial Damage?

There are three levels of commercial damage that are considered:

Level 1

Level 1 is a small commercial loss typically involving 15,000 square feet or less of affected floor space. If the facility was entirely affected, examples of a small commercial loss may include but are not limited to, a stand-alone retail establishment, a small church, a daycare facility, a small shopping center, a small warehouse or manufacturing facility, or a stand-alone administrative building. A Level 1 loss can also be a small portion of a much larger structure.

Level 2

Level 2 is a midsize commercial loss typically involving 15,000 to 60,000 square feet of affected floor space. The building or buildings involved are usually multi-level or greatly divided spaces. If the facility was entirely affected, examples of a Level 2 loss may include but are not limited to, a small multi-family property, a midsize church or school, a small shopping center, a multi-tenant administration facility, or a midsize warehouse or manufacturing facility. A Level 2 loss can also be just a portion of a much larger structure.

Level 3

Level 3 is a large commercial loss typically involving more than 60,000 square feet of affected floor space. The building or buildings involved will likely be large multi-level structures. If the facility was entirely affected, examples of a Level 3 loss can include, but are not limited to, a large church, hospital, school, or university; a large multi-family property; a mid- to high-rise retail or administration facility; a large industrial, manufacturing, or warehouse facility; or a large strip-style shopping center or shopping mall. This is the level at which it would be appropriate to refer to the project as a “large loss.”
